A person who is suffering from a physical disability has to face many problems. Such persons feel dejected due to insensitive behavior of society. Don’t have any idea how to cope situations arising due to their physical condition. They need a place where the people facing same problem can come together and share their difficulties with each other. A place where they can get a hope to live a life full of dignity, confidence and self worth.
Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (IAMD) is working for the patients suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.
Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of muscle diseases that results in increasing weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles over time. This makes a person crippled. People eventually become unable to walk. Some types are also associated with problems in other organs.
IAMD shows them a silver lining to the grey clouds in their sky.

The mission of IAMD is to create greater awareness of Muscular Dystrophy. It tries reach out to each and every person living with Muscular Dystrophy and attempt to provide a chance to lead a normal life to sufferer.
IAMD is working since 1992 to provide relief and rehabilitation to the people afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy in India and also to create public awareness on this matter. The organization is working for all types of disabilities in the State of Himachal Pradesh. Its Head Quarter at Solan (HP).
IAMD is Making family members and general public sensitive to needs of those affected with disease and also offering hope to suffering from MD.
The association organises camps with aim to give counselling and lifestyle management tips.
It provides wheelchair support for those in need. IAMD also arranges for physiotherapy services,
Provisioning of caregivers and
financial assistance needed for procurement of equipment. It is also working for education of afflicted children.
IAMD has taken the responsibility of the task of creating awareness amongst the masses regarding this Muscular Dystrophy and it´s ramifications. In many cases more than one family member is affected with it. IAMD despite having very meager resources at its disposal have been doing the best. IAMD holds a summer camp each year and inviting MD afflicted persons from across the country. In these summer camps these persons come together. They talk and laugh together and have nice time.
The President of IAMD is Sanjana Goel. She is winner of President’s Award Winner (2004), She herself is afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy.
The services provided by IAMD are
JAGRITI (Awareness Camps)
IAMD organizes two days awareness camps at National level. It offers free diagnostic facilities and lots of fun activities and chance for the MD sufferers to be inspired by role models.
PUNARUTHHAN (Regular Physiotherapy Services)
IAMD runs a regular physiotherapy & counseling centers at Chandigarh, Delhi, and Solan. Here free transportation services are also provided for MD sufferer to come to centre.
PUNAR-SANJEEVAN (Personality Development Program)
Project Punar-Sanjeevan is a comprehensive residential, orientation and overall personality development 10days program for children with MD.
SATHI (Care Giver Support)
Provides monthly remuneration to care givers for persons with MD completely dependent on others for their daily chores and are unable to self finance.
SAHARA (Direct Financial Help)
Provides financial assistance to people with MD in making them economically independent.
WINGS (Wheel Chair Support)
IAMD provides good quality wheel chairs as well powered wheel chairs, on loan basis and free of cost as per the requirement and financial status of the family.
SAMPARK (Bringing out Volunteers)
Conducting sessions in educational and social institutions about awareness and bringing out volunteers.
SANDESH (Dissemination of Information)
Providing latest information about care and management, treatment, therapy and cure via pamphlets, e-mail and telephone.
GURUKUL (Day Care Center)
A small day care center run by IAMD, for children living with all types of disabilities.
NIDAN (Diagnostic Facilities)
IAMD helps and guides for diagnosis and proper care management. It also helps for corrective surgeries of people with other disabilities.
PROJECT MANAV MANDIR IAMD is coming up with this Apex Centre at Solan in Himachal Pradesh for complete care, management, test and diagnosis, rehabilitation, orientation, rejuvenation, research and all therapies for people living with Muscular Dystrophy.
The Government of Himachal Pradesh took a pro-active stance towards setting up a central facility for dealing with Muscular Dystrophy by providing an area of 1942.50 square metres on nominal lease. The construction work started in July, 2013. IAMD has already invested a sum of Rs.3.40 crore.
The organisation is working on a multi-pronged strategy to help mitigate the sufferings of MD patients in every conceivable manner that is humanly possible.
IAMD is able to make the life of a MD patient comfortable. A broad smile on the face of an MD patient is a befitting reward for organisation’s efforts in this regard.
